Stomach Bug Blues

source
Both of my sons have been sick this week with some sort of stomach bug.  It hasn't been pretty!  I was praying and hoping that I wouldn't get it, but unfortunately, I did.  Last night was pretty rough because throwing up is never fun.  I think I spent more time in the bathroom then I did in my bed.  Ugh!

But now, my stress level has totally increased!  Because my boys were home sick and basically just laying around when they weren't throwing up, I couldn't get in any workouts.  The only thing I've done this week was my last long run on Monday.  There is NO WAY I can do anything today...I'm barely able to sit up let alone swim/bike/run.  I could potentially do something tomorrow, but it all depends on my stomach.  So, I'm kind of freaking out!!

What should I do?  I feel like I should and need to work out because I have an IM in 11 days!  BUT, I also feel like I need to let my body rest and get rid of this stupid stomach bug!  I'm afraid of overdoing it and getting even more sick.  This is just really cruddy timing.  But, I guess getting the stomach bug next week before my race would have been even worse, so maybe I should be grateful that I got it now?  Ugh!

I know I usually keep this blog pretty upbeat, and I'm sorry if this post sounds like a bunch of whining...I just needed to vent.

OH NO!! If their was something postive, at least its now, not in 11 days

I go by the old rule "above the neck... train, below the neck... rest till I am better"

Your training is their, you done the miles, a couple days off is not going to throw all of that away, I would play it smart and wait till I feel better

Ok, ALL of your fitness for Arizona is IN THE BAG. You will NOT lose any fitness over the next 11 days. In fact your body is going to get stronger from actually letting it heal! You might lose some sharpness, but its all in your head about your legs losing any fitness.

Heal up! Kick the flu, and race. You are going to do GREAT!

Better now than on race day, right? Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

After so many months of training, you've put in most of the work already. I don't think that a extra few days off until you are back up to par is bad thing. Might actually be a good thing. Better to wait than to prolong recovery and feel crappy because you pushed it. Just my two cents. You will be FINE!

Rest! Get 100% better. Focus on staying hydrated- start with chicken broth (real chicken broth if you can make it)... your #1 concern right now will be replacing nutrients as your body/stomach allows. Eat plants- fruits and vegetables and get sleep. Do not worry for a second about training until you are feeling 100% healthy and spunky!

Oh, so sorry you are sick. Stomach bugs are usually gone quickly, so lets hope you will be better by tomorrow. You will probably feel a bit weak, but if you feel better, I would do some light swim bike or run. But only if you feel better.

Of course you're freaking out! I'm so sorry! As others have said, You won't loose your fitness. You've trained hard! And you do need to stay hydrated...with electrolytes. Gatorade or whatever.

You can find stories on discussion boards where athletes have been forced to take that time off right before a race and they end up doing really well. Your body will thank you for the rest you give it right now.

Good luck and I hope everyone is feeling better!

REST - REST - REST! You have DONE the work you need to do for this IM. The worst thing you could do to yourself is put more pressure on yourself to get in workouts. If you feel good, go for a walk to get your body moving, but DON't push it. Your body won't thank you! REST!
Hope the family and you feel better soon:) Hugs!

You are not going to lose fitness as you have been training for a very very very long time and fitness doesn't melt away like snow on a hot day.

Your body needs to rest and get rid of this bug and in that same process it will get stronger. We get stronger when our body rests after training, it does not get stronger during the workout. This is why there is a taper period.....so your body gets stronger.

You will be golden IF you let your body heal and rest up.

I agree with the REST recommendation. You've put in the training. You want be done with the stomach bug as quickly as possible.

Oh no!!! As everyone else said, all your hard work is done. Rest and recover - that's the main priority!!! You can do really easy stuff next week when you are here if you feel up to it but otherwise just heal!
(Now i know why you didn't answer my email LOL)

Funny how viruses travel. We've had the same thing going around here. My son seems to have missed it since he was home sick with something else last week when it was going around (I'll take what he had over vomiting!)

As for you, my dear, rest, rest, rest. You've banked your training. You're not going to lose anything now by resting, but you might if you push yourself when you are not well. Take care of yourself. Feel better soon.

just in case you need one more person saying it - REST!! Give your body time to recover and then go be a rock-star. you will do great!

Girl. The hay is in the barn. Nothing you do now will improve your fitness. The best thing you can do for your race is get better. Rest. Rest. Then rest. Trust me. You will not lose a thing.

I'm another person firmly in the rest camp. REST! Your body needs it! Stay hydrated with electrolytes and follow BRAT diet if possible (you know, the one you follow for your kids: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). The more you rest, the faster you will recover and then you will be ready for race day!!!

Hope your already on the mend!

Take care get well travel safe!

you need to get better! the best way to do that is to REST and stay hydrated. do not workout until you feel 100% better. you've done the training, it's there, and trying to do workouts while sick is going to send you on a backslide! stay in bed!!!!!

Sorry to hear you're sick! But if it's any consolation, if you had to pick a time to get sick, this would be it! During the taper, with plenty of time to get better before the race.

You won't lose anything by resting. You can lose a lot by pushing it. Just remember that! Big ((HUGS)) to you!

Rest and recovery. You've been putting in months of heavy training a few days to let your body heal won't change that.

Feel better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
