I have created a new word: Rulk. What is a rulk?
Here is my definition:
1. A mixture of running and walking. So, instead of saying, I'm going to walk 2 min then run 2 min., you can just say, "I'm going to rulk for 2 minutes."
2. What happens when you start out running, but end up having to walk.
This was what my car said the temperature was outside today when I decided to head out for a run.
67 degrees in March! Woohoo! March is typically our snowiest month, so this was awesome!
I decided to put on my new shoes from Pearl Izumi. I give you the isoTransitions (review coming soon):
I drove to the Highline Canal, my favorite running trail, and headed out on my run. It was absolutely beautiful out and it was so nice to be able to run outside again. I didn't know how my knee would do, but I was hopeful.
I was taking it really easy, feeling good, enjoying the sunshine, when all of a sudden I got a twinge of pain in my knee. I looked at my Garmin, and this is what I saw:
I only made it 1.71 miles. :( Oh, and my new shoes, which are designed to be worn sockless, started to give me a nice blister on the back of my left heel. Ugh! I don't know what I was thinking!! I should have used bodyglide or something, but I was just so excited to get out I didn't think about it. Lesson learned!
So, I had a little pity party, said a few words, then decided to make the best of the situation. Since I couldn't run, I decided I would just walk the rest of the way back to my car and just enjoy the beautiful day. It is not often that I actually get to SLOW down and just enjoy my surroundings.
I took my shoes off and walked 1.71miles back to my car. Although my knee was hurting, I couldn't help but run short sections while I was barefoot. So, I rulked it. Yes, there were little pebbles that hurt like hell on the bottoms of my feet, but for the most part, it was AWESOME!
I know I wasn't able to run today, and I was pretty disappointed. But, I am hopeful that if I keep up with my stretching and foam rolling, this annoying ITB issue will heal. All I can do is hope.

Um...I would say you've about worn that red polish down enough now to deserve a new pedicure!
I hope the ITB starts healing a little faster but HOORAY for leisurly walks with bursts of barefoot running in the lovely warm weather!

Sorry to hear about your ITB issues - nagging injuries are so frustrating! Did you try putting Tiger Balm on it? That helps a lot of my aches/pains, including shin splints...

This is so early in your training, and you got some time on your feet. Plus, you are rocking swimming, and probably biking, too. No worries!
I like the new word! I had to do a little rulking during my workout yesterday. My legs were just NOT into the whole run thing.

Darn that ITB! Have you tried the massage yet?
Hope the IT band gets better. I just got a couple pairs of those shoes, they remind me of the zoots I used to wear. Gonna try them out this weekend.

Rulk. I like that word. You should coin it. Do you think your knee is bugging you as a result of the ITB? Maybe running differently b/c the ITB hurts? Just a thought. Love the new running shoes. Those are the one's I originally asked for but got the Streak II's. Beggers can't be choosers so I take what I can get. I'll be curious to see what you think of them once you run in them w/socks on. I did a little mini-review on the Streaks a few posts back. Since they are minimalist, i have to ease into it. I don't run barefoot at all and the 4 miles I ran in them felt fine but i did "feel" my feet by mile 3. I also felt the 2 acorns I stepped on too and that sent a shock right thru my foot...ouch! Baby steps with those shoes since I;m so used to pillow like softness of Saucony. Hope your knee/ITB feel better real soon.
I love rulk but I have to say Big Daddy Diesel said it first : ) Either way it is such a great phrase!

I like the new word. I often have to do that. I am sorry about the knee. I know that nagging injuries are no fun. I have an issue going on with my calves and it sucks. Makes it real hard to prepare for my 1/2 marathon in May!
I hope that we that we are both blessed with miracles real soon and the injuries disapperar!

Sorry about the Rulk! :( Nagging injuries are the worst! I had some IT problems and trigger point therapy really helped. The TP is actually in the hip. Just a thought!

Can't wait for the review on the shoes. I have been meaning to try out some sockless shoes at some point but I am always weary to the blister issue. I blister easily on my feet.

I was just thinking how the heck did you walk on that pea gravel on the Highline?!? Owie! I have super sensitive feet though. Nevertheless, I'm sorry the knee didn't hold out better for you. Did you go to a doctor yet about it? I swim and workout what Tara (Colorado Runner blog) and she's been sidelined with knee pain but her PT has said it is workable and he has helped her a lot over the past couple months. Maybe a thought, not sure what you've tried. He is somewhere down South Denver.
Loving this sunshiny days! Hopefully we can get together...might have to be for a bike ride, though. I'm off work Mar 28 - April 1, but will be in Moab until the 29th. If you wanna ride one day, give me a shout !!

Well, 1.77 is better than nothing, that's what I would keep on saying. I also love the word RULK---since all of my runs over 6 miles involve a run/walk method, this is the PERFECT word for me!

perfect word...and it made me think of Sulk which is what I was doing if I was forced to rulk...rulking and sulking. But it sounds like you have a good attitude about it all Aimee! Hang in there. sounds like you're playing it smart...wise woman! ;)

Sharp shoes but sorry about the blister! I did my share of rulking yesterday but for entirely different reasons!
Racing Weight: I don't think being veg will affect what you get out of the book at all. He barely gets into exact foods at all.
